Walldürn

Walldürn, Germany · 1330

Spilled Precious Blood dried into the image of the crucified Christ.

What happened

In 1330, a priest at Walldürn accidentally overturned the chalice after the consecration. The Precious Blood spread across the corporal — and as it dried, those who saw it found it had formed the image of Christ crucified, ringed by small heads crowned with thorns.

The "Blood Corporal" was hidden, then rediscovered, and Walldürn grew into one of Germany’s great pilgrimage shrines, its devotion confirmed by Rome in the fifteenth century.

Where it stands

Church-recognized

Pilgrimage recognized by the Bishop of Würzburg (1408); indulgences granted by Pope Eugene IV (1445); raised to a basilica in 1962.

Church recognition is a judgment about devotion — not a claim of scientific proof. We keep the two distinct.

The bigger picture

This case is one witness in a much longer story — the Catholic teaching that Christ is truly, substantially present in the Eucharist.
