Macerata

Macerata, Italy · 1356

A doubting priest broke the host, and blood ran onto the linen.

What happened

In 1356, a priest at Macerata who privately doubted the Real Presence broke the consecrated host during Mass. Blood flowed from it onto the corporal beneath his hands.

The blood-marked corporal has been preserved and venerated in Macerata’s cathedral for nearly seven centuries.

Where it stands

Diocesan approval

Subject of an episcopal investigation; the blood-marked corporal is venerated in the cathedral.

Church recognition is a judgment about devotion — not a claim of scientific proof. We keep the two distinct.
