Bordeaux

Bordeaux, France · 1822

During Benediction, the figure of Christ appeared in the monstrance, arms open as from the cross.

What happened

On 3 February 1822, during Benediction at the Church of St. Eulalia in Bordeaux, those present saw the figure of Christ appear within the monstrance, his arms opening as if from the cross.

Archbishop d’Aviau personally questioned the witnesses and recognized the event. The monstrance is preserved at La Solitude, in nearby Martillac.

Where it stands

Diocesan approval

Recognized by Archbishop d’Aviau of Bordeaux, who examined the witnesses himself.

Church recognition is a judgment about devotion — not a claim of scientific proof. We keep the two distinct.

This case is one witness in a much longer story — the Catholic teaching that Christ is truly, substantially present in the Eucharist.
